Skype Releases Software Versions for Mac OS X and for Linux

skypeThe IP telecom software innovator becomes truly cross-platform, now allowing free calls between Windows, Pocket PC, the Mac and Linux devices, and a call to any landline worldwide at local calling costs.

Skype Technologies SA announced availability from its website of the Version 1.0 downloads of its software for the Mac and Linux, following extensive worldwide beta testing.

Skype for Mac OS X and Skype for Linux include free Skype-to-Skype calling, and conference calling for up to 5 participants, cross-platform communications, presence, personalization, and the pre-pay SkypeOut service for local landline access.

These new products join previous Skype releases in the following features:

— the Skype Global Directory – the user-built global Skype contacts directory

— Instant messaging – cross platform messaging ability

— Conference calling – instantly create a free 5-party conference call

— Logs – reference or discard call and message history

— Presence – manage availability and view status of contacts

— Customization – MyPicture image display, ring tones, call alert options

— File transfer – send and receive files via Skype

— Mobility – sign in to a Skype account anywhere in the world

— SkypeOut – pre-pay to call the PSTN anywhere, at local rates

— Multiple Skype accounts on one computer

— End-to-end encryption.

Skype is available in 20 languages and has more than 23 million registered users worldwide, with more than 130,000 new users per day. Since its launch in August 2003, Skype has been downloaded more than 56 million times.

SIPfoundry Deploys Three New Open Source SIP-Compliant Technologies

Three new open source software solutions fully compliant with the IETF’s SIP standards will accelerate the adoption of the SIP protocol.

SIPfoundry, Inc has announced sipX – the SIP PBX for Linux, reSIProcate – the Reference SIP Stack, and the SIP Interoperability Project, three projects to serve as industry catalysts for the widespread adoption of SIP as the definitive IP communications infrastructure.

sipX, the SIP PBX for Linux, is a 100 percent SIP, 100 percent open source, PBX, voicemail, auto-attendant and SIP proxy, fully interoperable with SIP-compliant media gateways and phones. It is immediately downloadable and is fully manageable via a web-browser interface.

reSIProcate is a SIP stack, unencumbered by any one company’s commercial agenda, that provides the a fully standards compliant implementation of all key IETF RFCs relating to SIP, including enhanced security features, NAT Traversal, Instant Messaging, and Presence.

The SIP Forum Test Framework (SFTF), designed and written by the SIP Forum and hosted by SIPfoundry as the SFTF SIP Interoperability Project, is a growing body of open source test suites that help SIP product users and vendors ensure standards conformance and interoperability – helping to eliminate SIP islands.

Zoom Begins Shipping the V3, Zoom’s Second Major VoIP Product

V3 provides VoIP and Data Networking to Cable and ADSL Modem Users

Zoom Technologies, Inc’s (NASDAQ: ZOOM) new V3 connects to the Ethernet port of a cable modem or ADSL modem, and includes a router, firewall with stateful packet inspection, 4-port switching hub, and TelePort VoIP port, which lets users make conventional telephone calls or VoIP calls from the same phone.

This provides a second phone line while allowing conventional phone service for 911 emergency dialing, toll-free number dialing, or in the event of a power failure, thus addressing the difficulty many consumers have with parting from their traditional, reliable and familiar telephone service.

The Zoom V3 allows users to use their own VoIP phone service, or can come bundled with Zoom’s Global Village phone service, which allows free VoIP calls over the Internet, and low cost calls to any phone on the conventional telephone network with both pay-per-call and unlimited-in-the-US calling plans.

Other features of the Zoom V3 include:

• Integrated Firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection and NAT (Network Address Translation)

• Integration of the voice processing with the firewall in the router, to ensure reliability of VoIP calls and reduce service provider support requirements
