Novatel Wireless Announces Its First 3G Wireless IP Devices

February 16, 2005

novatelIt will release a suite of HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE broadband wireless products in the second half of 2005.

Novatel Wireless, Inc (Nasdaq:NVTL) announced today the selection of QUALCOMM chipsets and system software for high speed broadband wireless data devices Novatel Wireless is developing for release later this year.

These devices will support wide-area multimode, multi-band wireless data access in markets around the world. The new UMTS/HSDPA wireless standards enable speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps, and these devices will also be backward compatible with existing GPRS, EDGE, and GSM wireless data networks.

HSPDA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is an enhancement to the UMTS worldwide wireless telephony standard, designed to enable packet data transmission at theoretical speeds of up to 10 Mbps, or five times faster than UMTS. It can be implemented as an upgrade to existing infrastructure, without overlaying an entirely new radio network.

HSDPA is an element of the 3GPP Release 5 WCDMA specification, and provides a two-fold improvement in network capacity to provide the higher data speeds. With initial speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps, HSDPA becomes a viable alternative to landline cable and DSL connections, supporting packet-based multimedia services like video conferencing, and improving the performance of time-dependent applications like live video streaming and multi-player gaming.

Earlier this month, Novatel Wireless released the Expedite EV620 PC Card modem for laptops, designed to deliver access speeds up to a theoretical 2.4 Mbps on EVDO broadband data networks which are just beginning to be rolled out by carriers. That card also auto-selects for 800 or 1900 MHz band CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and CDMA2000 1X networks.

PCTEL Roaming Client Retains Phone Number from GSM to VoWiFi

February 3, 2005

pctelThe new client permits users to initiate and receive calls using a single number on cellular and IP networks.

PCTEL, Inc (NASDAQ:PCTI) announced today completion of development of its VoIP-Enabled Roaming Client (Roaming Client-VE).

The Roaming Client-VE, when deployed with a compatible server, for users with the latest converged devices (e.g., a 3G/WiFi Smart Phone), will allow consumers to initiate a VoIP call from a Wi-Fi HotSpot and then maintain that call while roaming onto a cellular network.

The initial release will roam in standby mode. Features include connection management, profile management, Wi-Fi HotSpot authentication and 802.1x / WPA security, on wireless networks.

Additionally, the Roaming Client-VE includes a Voice Dialer that operates on both cellular and IP networks. It uses SIM-EAP for authentication. Using a single user interface, a user can share contacts, call histories, and other common phone features.

PCTEL developed its Roaming Client-VE in cooperation with a leading Mobile VoIP infrastructure vendor. The commercial relationship will be announced at the 3GSM World Congress, scheduled for February 14-17 in Cannes, France.
